How to choose your outfits for your family session.

I understand that selecting the outfits for your session might feel a bit daunting, but don’t worry, this blog post will help make the process a breeze :) In general, you will get the most from your photography session if you choose a style/colour palette for your family to wear. This could be as simple as all wearing neutral tones with a splash of colour, or some lovely warm earthy/neutrals. It is, of course, best not to clash with each other (e.g., don’t all wear different patterns and clashing colours) but this certainly doesn’t mean you have to dress formally or totally match, in fact, I recommend wearing complementary outfits rather than matching ones.

The best place to start is with Mums outfit, as it's much easier to coordinate the other outfits around this choice. The most important thing is to choose an outfit that makes you (Mum) feel beautiful. Dresses and skirts are always lovely for photography as the movement of the material creates some gorgeous photos when you move, twirl or the wind blows. Choose some nice accessories that make you feel amazing too such as earrings, rings and necklaces, a scarf or a hat is always a great option.

Using the colours of Mums outfit, then organise the children's outfits that complement the colours and fabric in Mums outfit. With kids, I recommend avoiding any logo T-shirt or T-shirt with a crazy pattern as we want the focus to be on your children’s lovely faces, their expressions and their amazing eyes, so we don’t want to draw the focus away from their faces onto a bold patterned shirt. Logos and emblems on T-shirts will date the photos quickly and we want the photos to be timeless for you. If you have younger children wearing dresses and nappies, it's great to have a ‘nappy cover’ over the nappy so that we don’t get any photos of the nappy on show. Make sure with your children's outfits, that they are really comfortable to run around and move. Also, make sure you pack a couple of layers in case they get cold/hot as want to ensure they feel happy and comfortable.

Then move onto your partner's outfit, this outfit is often the easiest. A simple white t-shirt or shirts & chinos or neutral, navy, brown shorts is always an easy option. You want Dad to feel comfortable and happy.

The most important thing is to have fun with it! Choose outfits that reflect your families personalities. Use Pinterest for some inspiration too, I have created an inspiration board here that you are welcome to view here, where I have saved outfit inspiration and colour palette ideas.
