How To Prepare For Your Maternity Photography Session.

Your Maternity Session

Thank you so much for choosing me to be your maternity photographer.

I am really excited to take some beautiful photographs of your family and beautiful baby bump.

In this guide you will find all the details of what to expect, both from our session together and from the delivery of your images afterwards, but if you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to me.

Your session will begin with me getting to know you and your story so we can capture your unique maternity journey.

You can do your maternity session with your partner and family or just you, both options are just beautiful and its entirely personal preference if you would like your family to be part of it or not.

If you choose to do your session with your family we can capture family photos and maternity photos together.

My style of photography is very relaxed, candid and natural, as I feel the best images are taken when you (and your family if they attend) are less aware of the camera. It will be such a fun session as I capture your story. But we of course, will get some more formal portraits for you as well.

I will send you a questionnaire to complete prior to the session, this just gives me all the details I need to get the most from our session together and also helps me focus the time we have on capturing the photos you will treasure.

What To Wear For Your Maternity Session?

Selecting the outfits for your session can feel a little daunting, but don’t worry, this guide will help make the process a breeze. The most important thing is that you all feel comfortable and relaxed.

In general, you will get the most from your photography session if you choose a complementary style / colour palette for you and your family/partner to wear.

I don’t recommend all matching outfits exactly, its much better to use complementary outfit choices.

Outfits are such personal choices, there is not a right or wrong answer here, its really what makes you all feel good, comfortable and relaxed.

Have fun with it! Use Pinterest for some inspiration too.

For maternity sessions I recommend wearing nude underwear / bikini so as we can capture some photos of your bare belly (if you want to do this). A dress that has a split where we can show your belly is also lovely, or a shirt that you can change into to cover your shoulders and arms whilst showing your belly too.

I think every pregnant woman is just beautiful and it is such a magical moment to capture in photos.

Maternity sessions are very personal and its entirely up to you how much of your gorgeous body you want to show in your photos and we can even decide on the day depending on how you are feeling.

We can capture a series of photos with dress and bare bump all the way through to tastefully semi naked if you want to do this.

Once I edit the photos if there are any you don’t wish to include in your final gallery we can of course delete them afterwards, you are in full control of your photos.

Your Outfit..

Start with your outfit first, as its much easier

to coordinate the other outfits around

this choice.

The most important thing is to choose an outfit that makes you feel beautiful.

Dresses are always lovely for maternity photography as the movement of the material creates some gorgeous photos when you twirl or the wind blows, having a dress that opens at the front is also great so you can show off your beautiful bare belly - if you want to.

Also I recomend nude underwear or a bikini so you can if you wish get some photos of your beautiful glowing pregnant body.

Enjoy wearing a hat or jewellery or accessories that also make you feel amazing.

Don't worry about shoes, barefoot is almost always best for beach sessions.

Kids Outfits...

If your other family members are coming, use the colours of your outfit, then

organise your child/children’s outfits from that, pull some colours from your outfit, to use in the children’s outfits, so that they compliment

each other.

I recommend avoiding any logo T-shirt or T-shirt with crazy patterns as we want the focus to be on your children’s lovely faces , their expressions and their amazing eyes, so we don’t want to draw the focus away from their faces into a bold patterned shirt.

If you have younger kids wearing dresses and nappies, its great to have a ‘nappy cover’ over the nappy so that we don’t get any photos of the nappy in show.

Make sure your children are comfortable to run around and move and have a couple of layers in case they get cold as we want to ensure they feel happy.

Other Outfits...

Then move onto any other outfits. If you

have a partner a simple white t-shirt or

shirts & chinos or neutral, navy, brown shorts

is always an easy option.

I usually recommend not having everyone match each other, it always looks amazing when the outfits complement each other, rather than entirely match, but its such a personal preference, please do what's right for you.

If you are looking for a maternity dress to

hire I can also recommend Mama Rentals

for beautiful dress hire.

I also have a small collection of maternity dresses including from Hazel & Folk, you can borrow from my client wardrobe. Just ask me and I can send you some options I have

What To Bring To A Maternity Session...

Here is a list of things I recommend that you

bring so that the session can run smoothly

  1. A neutral / coordinated picnic blanket for some of the seated portrait photos.
  2. Nude underwear / swimwear if you would like to show your gorgeous bare bump and a dress that opens at the front or a shirt you can wear over your swimmers.
  3. 1 or 2 outfit choices to change between
  4. Your baby scan if you would like this in a photo.
  5. An item of clothing you will be using for your newborn like tiny shoes or teddy
  6. A towel and warm coat in case you would like to do an in water photo.
  7. Water, snacks and sun cream in case you need it
  8. Also bring any other objects that really tell your maternity story.

Should I Choose Sunrise Or Sunset?

The best time of day for outdoor sessions is either early morning or later afternoon in the ‘golden hour’. This is the 1 to 2 hours before sunset and after sunrise each day. The light at this time is beautifully soft and flattering and produces the most gorgeous photos.

If you are up early every day then earlier morning may work better for your family, but if you are not a morning person then afternoon may suit better. Some locations also work better for sunrise or sunset too, depending on where the sun sets in that location.

I love photographing ‘back lit’, which means your back is to the sun, as this is the most flattering, so at sunset I photograph mostly along the beach or with the background of the sand dunes or the far end of the beach, where as sunrise I photograph with the background of the ocean.

See You At Your Session...

I can't wait to tell your story

I am so excited to capture some beautiful maternity photos of you. If you have any questions feel free to reach out by email or you are welcome to call me.

Thanks so much
